Cox Slashes PC Power Usage

Cuts Energy Costs 40% With Verdiem's Software on 15,000 Computers

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 8/12/2009 9:30:00 AM

Cox Communications is touting a "green" initiative the operator claims cut energy costs 40% for some 15,000 PCs since they were configured with power-management software earlier this year.

Atlanta-based Cox deployed Verdiem's Surveyor software on 15,000 networked PCs across 14 U.S. operating centers in April. While the company did not disclose the cost of the project, Cox expects to achieve a full return on investment within 2009.

The Verdiem software, which is integrated with Microsoft's SMS desktop administration system, automatically shuts down PCs that aren't being used or puts them into lower power states.

"One of the best things about Verdiem Surveyor, from an [information technology] perspective, is that it's invisible. People don't even know it's there," said Cox vice president of information technology and operational development Peter West. "We're saving nearly 40% on power usage, but we have no impact on the operation whatsoever."

Cox deployed Verdiem's PC power management solution as part of Cox Conserves, an initiative by parent company Cox Enterprises to conserve resources and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2017.

Verdiem, founded in 2001, has more than 300 customers, including the cities of Seattle, Boston and Honolulu. According to the company, a typical PC (without its software) consumes 535 kilowatt hours of electricity a year and two-thirds of that energy is wasted when the computer is not in active use.
