Broadcom OK'd For Coax Home-Networking Spec
Will Compete With Entropic as Second Supplier for MoCA 1.1 Silicon

Broadcom announced that its home-networking reference design platform for set-top box and broadband access products with integrated Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) connectivity has received MoCA 1.1 certification.
With the MoCA 1.1 certification, Broadcom becomes the second supplier for such silicon solutions, competing with Entropic Communications. Entropic, which has been the exclusive supplier of MoCA chips until now, noted in a statement Monday that it has shipped more than 20 million c.LINK MoCA-compliant chip sets to date.
Broadcom technical director Stephen Palm said the MoCA 1.1-certified chips are sampling now but he declined to disclose which equipment manufacturers are using them. The company announced 1.0 certification earlier this year.
The Broadcom system-on-a-chip solutions with MoCA 1.1 can provide up to 175 Mbps net throughput using packet aggregation, compared with the 1.0 spec's 100 Mbps. The 1.1 version also provides parameterized quality of service (PQoS) for bandwidth management and the ability to prioritize multiple streams of high-definition content, as well as an increase in network size from 8 to 16 nodes.
MoCA members include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Verizon Communications, Cisco Systems and Motorola.
