FiOS Enrolls At NYU
Verizon to Install Fiber-Optic Network in University's Faculty Housing in New York

Verizon Communications will install its FiOS network in New York University's faculty housing in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, under an agreement with the university announced Wednesday.
The deal -- the first for FiOS at a university or college in New York City -- covers NYU's Silver Towers and Washington Square Village, which comprise 2,300 living units. The deal is not exclusive, Verizon spokesman Rich Young said. Currently, Time Warner Cable offers video, voice and high-speed data service to the NYU residences.
According to Verizon, installation began Aug. 3 and residents will be able to order services about the time the fall semester classes start Sept. 8.
Verizon said it will use newly developed optical network terminals (ONTs) that are designed for use in apartment complexes. About the size of a standard home router, the ONTs take up less space than the FiOS units for single-family houses.
"FIOS provides high-speed Internet and advanced home-information and entertainment services that are essential for the 21st century," Mitchell Moss, a professor of urban policy and planning at NYU's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, said in a prepared statement. "The new social networking functions of FIOS and the capacity of an all-fiber network will enhance the attractiveness of New York City as the world capital for ideas and information."
