Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 8/13/2009 5:42:01 PM

Suddenlink Communications said it has deployed DOCSIS 3.0 to areas in Texas serving nearly 100,000 customers, or about 8% of its 1.3 million residential subscribers.

To date, the company has rolled out the next-generation cable-modem service to several markets in Texas, including Lubbock, Midland, Leander, Pflugerville and Georgetown. With the next-generation cable modem technology, the cable operator is offering a new Internet service with up to 20 Mbps download speeds. Suddenlink noted DOCSIS 3.0 provides the capability "to provide even faster speeds, as customer demand requires."

Suddenlink director of corporate communications Gene Regan said the 20-Mbps service is available only in DOCSIS 3.0 markets. In areas served with DOCSIS 2.0 infrastructure with the top speeds in other markets of 10-12 Mbps.

St. Louis-based Suddenlink has operations in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia.

Of the largest U.S. cable operators Comcast has been the most aggressive in deploying DOCSIS 3.0, recently raising its deployment target to nearly 80% of its footprint by the end of 2009, representing about 40 million homes and businesses.
