Pace Connects Set-Tops With Rovi

Deal Aimed At Providing Access To Digital Content In The Home

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 8/24/2009 2:04:12 PM

Set-top maker Pace will use Rovi's Connected Platform solution in its next-generation boxes sold to operators in the U.S. and elsewhere in the Americas, to provide access to digital media over a home network.

Rovi's Connected Platform is designed for networked digital entertainment devices that store, discover, and play back personal and Internet-based content. The software supports connectivity to devices via Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), Universal Plug and Play, DTCP-IP and OCAP/tru2way specifications, according to Rovi, which changed its name from Macrovision Solutions last month.

Pace said it would use the Connected Platform -- which comprises a source-code development kit, player and server software applications and a customizable user interface -- for its set-top portfolio in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.

"We are committed to working with our customers in the service provider and cable markets to provide consumers with a cutting-edge entertainment experience that allows access to multiple types of digital media in the home," Pace vice president of product development Bruce Gureck said in a statement.

The announcement expands on an existing relationship between Rovi and Pace. In 2007, the two companies collaborated to add support for the DLNA specifications to Pace's set-top box and server products by integrating Rovi's media player and media server software.

U.K.-based Pace acquired the set-top box and connectivity solutions business of Royal Philips Electronics in April 2008 and currently has more than 900 employees.
