Weather Channel Dives Into Digital Music

Launches Site Where Users Can Download Songs Featured On Network

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 8/25/2009 12:22:32 PM

The Weather Channel has entered the digital music scene.

The Weather Channel licensing division has launched www.TheWeatherChannelMusic.com, where users can download music from popular artists and independent musicians whose tunes are featured on the network.
"The debut of TheWeatherChannelMusic.com is a natural extension of our on air music strategy for The Weather Channel," said Shari Pace, vice president of licensing for The Weather Channel, in a statement. "Since the launch of our first CD, the goal has been to expand our musical offerings to encompass a wider variety of music. We also wanted to add the digital platform as an alternative channel of distribution for consumers to enjoy and purchase our popular ‘local on the 8's,' on-air music in a timely and relevant way."
The following are among The Weather Channel lifestyle collections and featured artists currently available:

"Getaway" -- This musical collection of smooth pop songs transport listeners to an incredible weather destination - whether that be via mp3 player during a morning jog, a sunset stroll or simply singing in the rain for the fun of it; "Rock the World" -- A guitar lover's dream, this collection features Carlos Santana, Toto's Steve Lukather and Steely Dan's Larry Carlton, among others.

"PM Edition Country Classics" -- Some of country music's best like Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, along with many of today's favorites and up-and-coming artists such as The Lone Starlets, can be found here;

"Acoustic Altitude" -- This collection spotlights some of the world's best acoustic guitar players, including the U.S. award winner Pete Hutlinger; and

"The Greats Series" - George Benson, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Al Jarreau are among this group's time-tested artists.
