TV One Sets Ratings Record With Music Special

Network's Essence Music Festival Coverage Draws A .81 Rating

by R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 9/4/2009 12:35:03 PM

TV One's Aug. 30 musical special TV One Night Only: Live From the Essence Music Festival set a ratings record for the African-American targeted network.

The tapedEssence and Beyonce special of the annual Essence Music Festival, which took place over the July 4 weekend in New Orleans, posted a .81 rating among all television households -- the highest rated show for the Comcast Cable and Radio One-owned network.
The two-hour special -- which featured performances from such R&B artists as Beyoncé, Anita Baker, Robin Thicke, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Teena Marie, En Vogue, Charlie Wilson, Salt N Pepa, and Jazmine Sullivan -- posted a 5.51 rating among African American households, topping all ad-supported cable shows during the 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. time period for the demo.
The TV One special is only the second time in its 15-year-history that African-American women's magazine has made its Festival performances available for television broadcast, and the first time on cable, according to TV One.
