Harmonic Converges On Three-Screen Video

MediaPrism Designed to Provide Workflow-Management Features

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/10/2009 5:00:29 PM

Harmonic launched workflow-management software, packaged together with transcoding, ingest and video-on-demand servers, in a suite that's designed to let service providers deliver video to TVs, PCs and mobile devices.

The system, dubbed MediaPrism, has been "deployed by tier 1 service providers for new mobile and Internet video service trials," according to Harmonic, but the vendor did not identify them.

A core element of the suite is the MediaPrism Workflow Manager, which automates the flow of assets through content ingest, transformation and delivery. The software can control scheduling, recording and playout with the other elements in the MediaPrism suite, in addition to other key functions such as ADI metadata processing and interfaces, EPG parsing and secure content delivery.

Also under the MediaPrism umbrella, Harmonic is introducing the ProStream 5000 file-based universal transcoder, which uses flash memory to transcode up to 16 video assets simultaneously. The ProStream 5000 supports a variety of formats, including Microsoft Silverlight, Apple's adaptive HTTP Live Streaming and Adobe Flash, in addition to mobile video formats and existing broadcast TV and video-on-demand services.

Other elements of the MediaPrism suite include Harmonic's CLEARcut and LIVEcut content-preparation software to capture and prepare assets for multiscreen viewing; and the StreamLiner 3000 video-streaming servers, which supports delivery formats including HTTP progressive download, Apple iPhone, Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash and UDP streaming.

Harmonic is demonstrating the MediaPrism suite at IBC 2009, which runs Sept. 11-15 in Amsterdam.
