Web Players Add Partners

Brightcove, ThePlatform Up the Ante in Video Rivalry

by Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/14/2009 2:00:00 AM

Rival online-video management platform providers Brightcove and thePlatform have both upped the ante in terms of their respective partner programs.

Brightcove said it has doubled the size of its program in the past seven months to include more than 200 technology, distribution and solution providers.

The company also has expanded the Brightcove Alliance partner categories, which now include content management, transcoding, e-mail and content, along with a new training and certification program for solution providers.

“The rapid growth of the Brightcove Alliance represents an enormous groundswell of innovation and value that third-party providers are building on top of the Brightcove platform,” Brightcove chairman and CEO Jeremy Allaire said in a statement.

Brightcove's customers include Discovery Communications, A&E Television Networks, Fox Entertainment Group, AOL and The New York Times. The Cambridge, Mass.-based company was founded in 2004.

Meanwhile, thePlatform, Comcast's Internet-video management subsidiary, last week announced that it had added 24 companies to its partner program, including Google's AdSense for Video advertising network.

The new partners bring thePlatform's program to more than 80 companies in categories including advertising campaign management systems; asset management; content protection; community creation; content delivery; content syndication and discovery; mobile; reporting and analytics; and transcoding.

Existing partners include Akamai Technologies, Adobe Systems, Microsoft, Move Networks, Harmonic's Rhozet and Widevine Technologies. A list of thePlatform's partners is available on its Web site.

“In an increasingly robust online video environment, media companies want the flexibility to integrate and test new technologies that best suit their business needs without worrying about compatibility issues,” said Marty Roberts, thePlatform's vice president of marketing, in a statement.

ThePlatform manages online video for Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Cablevision Systems, as well as programmers such as Starz Entertainment, CBS College Sports, CNBC, BBC and PBS. The company is currently involved in the back-end management of Comcast's On Demand Online trial.
