ACA Wants MSOs To Be Able To Import In-State, Out-Of-Market Station Signals
Polka Letter: Cable Should Have That Option If Congress Grants Satellite Permission

The American Cable Assocation wants to make sure that if Congress allows satellite operators to import in-state, out-of-market broadcasters, it extends the same courtesy to cable operators. In a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate Judiciary and Energy & Commerce Committees, ACA President Matt Polka said that if they decide to allow satellite operators to import in-state, out-of-market TV stations, it should do the same for cable operators.
"[G]iving the subscribers of satellite TV companies the right to receive enhanced local broadcast service without allowing customers of cable companies the same rights would be unfair to the tens of millions of consumers who choose to receive their communications services via cable," he wrote, "and would significantly disrupt the competitive video market Congress has helped create."
That came as the Senate Communications Subcommittee was holding a hearing on reathorizing the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reuthorization Act, including input from Senators who favor allowing that signal importation.

Same situation here in Eastern Arkansas. Both of the local cable operators offer the Memphis and Little Rock markets in their offering, yet with satellite we can only receive the Memphis market. The next county over is considered part of the Little Rock market and thus receives Little Rock channels. The Memphis channels totally ignore this part of state for any local/state news so we have no idea what is going on in our state, but we do get to hear the "Murder of the Day" every day in Memphis. I want to hear news about my state, not from Tennessee.

Funny, it's the reverse over here right now, all the cable companies in my area offer neighboring locals, while the satellite customers are stuck with in market locals only. We have a station a county away based in Allentown that frequently covers Pocono news, yet we cannot see it because they're part of the Philly market while we're part of Scranton. Pike County PA is another story entirely, satellite customers are stuck with the NYC stations since they're considered part of the NYC market, however the local cable company provides the Scranton stations, but when it comes to the NYC stations they don't carry WABC.
