Comcast, Clearwire,Sprint To Launch Broadband Wireless Service In Weeks Ahead

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/22/2009 5:27:37 PM

Clearwire, Comcast and Sprint will each launch commercial WiMax high-speed wireless service in Philadelphia in the next several weeks, followed by Chicago in November and the Seattle/Tacoma area in early December.

The companies, in a joint release Thursday, said customers should expect to see additional network expansions in those cities along with separate marketing and advertising initiatives.

The WiMax-based services, advertised as providing up to 6 Mbps downloads, is provided by Clearwire. Sprint owns 51% of the company, having combined its own 4G operations with Clearwire last year, and Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Intel and Google are also investors.

Comcast's 4G service, which it buys on a wholesale basis from Clearwire, is branded Comcast High-Speed 2go. The operator is marketing the service in bundles as part of wireline broadband service in Atlanta, Portland and Salem, Ore., and Bellingham, Wash.

In a separate announcement issued by Clearwire and Sprint, those two companies said they'll launch their respective WiMax mobile Internet services next month in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, N.C.; Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio, Texas. In early December, the providers will launch service in Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii

Time Warner Cable is the cable provider in each of those markets. The MSO announced it will debut Road Runner Mobile in North Carolina on Dec. 1, with Dallas by the end of the year and Hawaii in early 2010.
