TBS Closes MLB Postseason On A Down Note

Phillies' Quick NLCS Clincher Pushes Audience Down 4.4%

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/23/2009 5:22:14 PM

With the Philadelphia Phillies clubbing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series in just five games, TBS took an audience hit with its 2009 postseason coverage, compared with last year's playoffs.

Over 18 games, TBS averaged a 3.3 U.S. household rating, a 3.8 cable rating and nearly 5.15 million watchers, according to Nielsen data. The cable mark was off 5% from 4.0 mark and down 4.4% from 5.38 million watchers for 22 postseason games a year ago.

The 2008 numbers were fueled by a seven-game American League Championship Series in which Game 6 (8.9 million) and Game 7 (13.4 million) of the Tampa Bay-Boston series were the two of the most-watched baseball telecasts in cable history. The decisive game was the medium's best-ever MLB performer.
Measured against the five games of LCS game coverage in 2008, TBS officials indicated that its national ratings would have been up 6% from a 3.1 mark, 7% in viewers from 4.79 million and 6% in households (3.79 million compared to 3.57 million)
