Chinese telecom-equipment provider ZTE announced the U.S. availability of its DOCSIS-compliant Ethernet Passive Optical Network solution, to let cable operators expand optical network services for residential, commercial and mobile backhaul applications.

The solution lets MSOs provision EPON services using their existing DOCSIS back-office systems, via ZTE's new DOCSIS control plane.

With ZTE's EPON portfolio, cable operators can deliver services via optical network units (ONUs) that support high-speed data, voice, video and mobile-backhaul applications. The vendor said the products have been certified for the Metro Ethernet Forum's MEF-9 and MEF-14, to deliver carrier Ethernet service to business customers.

The solution is available from ZTE USA, based in Dallas with offices in Chicago, San Diego and Iselin, N.J. The parent company has a presence in more than 120 countries.

"ZTE's EPON solution is serving millions of EPON subscribers around the world today, and we're proud to extend its benefits to the U.S. market," ZTE USA chief technology officer George Sun said. "Today's announcement is another step in giving MSO's the advantage they need to strive for a competitive stake in the market."
