Upstart Ski Channel Lands Deal With Dish

On-Demand Service Now In Front Of More Than 21 Million Homes

by R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 11/9/2009 2:00:00 AM

The upstart Ski Channel last week sealed a long-term video-on-demand distribution deal with Dish Network, according to network officials.

The deal puts the channel, which focuses on year-round mountain activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, backpacking, climbing and off-slope activities, in front of more than 21 million homes, with more distribution deals expected in the short-term, according to Steve Bellamy, chairman and CEO of the channel.

“Dish Network is excited to now offer VOD content that speaks to the growing popularity of skiing and other mountain sports,” said Andy Karofsky, vice president of programming for Dish Network, in a statement. “We are always exploring new programming that contributes to the depth of content available via our already extensive VOD service, and The Ski Channel is a perfect addition.”

On the programming side, the network will offer content from several Colorado-based filmmakers including Sweetgrass Productions, Denver's Futuristic Films and Crested Butte's Two Plank Productions. In addition, the network will feature new shows and films including the works of legendary ski filmmaker Greg Stump, Bellamy said.
