Ericsson To Phase Out Tandberg Television Name

Moniker Fades To Black On Jan. 25

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 11/24/2009 4:22:01 PM

Ericsson will stop using the Tandberg Television name as of Jan. 25, 2010, the company said in e-mails to customers this week.

In April 2007, Ericsson acquired Tandberg Television in a deal worth about $1.4 billion, after outbidding Arris Group.

"It's now two and half years since Tandberg Television became part of the Ericsson group. During this time we have shown the world the important role we play in enabling the converged TV services modern consumers want," Staffan Pehrson, currently president of Tandberg Television and Ericsson's vice president and head of TV solutions, wrote in the e-mail.

"Television is a cornerstone of Ericsson's multimedia strategy, and Tandberg Television's market-leading technologies and expert team are at the core of this strategy. Together, we will draw on decades of broadcast TV market leadership and technology innovation, as we move to deliver on our vision for more on-demand and more HD, with multi-platform and converged television across cable, satellite, telco and terrestrial platforms," Pehrson wrote.

Tandberg Television was formed in 1979 when Norway's original Tandberg company split into videconferencing vendor Tandberg (which Cisco Systems is in the process of acquiring); storage-systems vendor Tandberg Data; and Tandberg Television.

Currently under Ericsson, the Tandberg Television group has more than 900 employees worldwide and is based in Duluth, Ga., near Atlanta.
