AT&T Has Agreements Covering 97% Of Wireline Union Workers

Deal for Southeast Region Covers 30,000 Workers

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 12/14/2009 2:14:01 PM

AT&T announced that it has reached a tentative deal with the Communications Workers of America in core wireline contract negotiations in the Southeast region, giving the telco agreements covering nearly 97% of the 120,000 employees covered under the company's core wireline contracts.

The latest agreement covers approximately 30,000 employees in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The contract in the Southeast region expired Aug. 8 and contracts with the other CWA bargaining units expired April 4.

Six of the seven bargaining units representing AT&T's core wireline employees now have either ratified or tentative agreements, with CWA District 1 - AT&T's East Region, covering employees in Connecticut - the only region that has yet to reach a contract. Employees there continue to work under the terms of the expired contract while negotiations continue.

Under the terms of the three-year proposed agreement with the Southeast CWA district, most employees will receive a 3% base salary increase in years one and two, a wage increase in year three of 2.75%, and pension band increases of 2% for each year of the agreement. The new contracts also provide for continued health care coverage with "reasonable cost sharing."

Agreements between AT&T and the CWA have been ratified in the Midwest, Southwest, and West regions, as well as with Legacy AT&T Corp., which covers employees across the country. An agreement between AT&T and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has also been ratified.

AT&T said most of the impact from these contracts will be reflected in financial results, beginning in 2010.
