Fair Use and Fair Play
(RE: “Glickman Defends Movie Industry’s IP Meeting With Biden,” Dec. 18): [This is] MPAA’s and RIAA’s payback for Fair Use, Betamax and Home Audio Recording technology. Those organizations have always resented the Supreme Court’s decision and definition of Fair Use when applied to home recording. Why rush when the special interests can slowly erode consumers rights one new limitation at a time. Keep the limitations a secret, because if the consumer knew of the limitations they would not buy the product.
Mike Raphone, Florida
More Heat Than Light
(RE: “Time Warner Cable: More Than 400,000 Visited Its Programming Choice Web Site,” Dec. 27): “I personally think it’s funny how TWc’s site is largely biased towards “Get Tough”. They have only a select few user comments on their page and, go figure, it’s a for the get tough side. You will not see a negative comment on TWC’s website and I think the people that are voting for get tough need to get all the information before choosing. The only good decision is an informed decision.”
Nathan Zimmerman, Daytona Beach, Fla.
Let Market Punch 'Ticket’
(RE: “FCC Sets Its Sights On Fiber Exemption,” Dec. 19): “Whether the games in question are in-market or out-of-market, the key issue is whether exclusive content can be used to gain competitive advantage. If the answer is no, then ALL exclusive content deals (whether due to terrestrial exemption or contract) should be prohibited, including NFL Sunday Ticket. If exclusive content can be used for competitive advantage, then get out of the way and let the marketplace decide.”

A Loophole Due To Be Closed
(RE: “FCC to Propose Ending Terrestrial Exemption: Source” Dec. 16): “It’s long overdue to end the loophole. The original intent of the rule was to encourage small operators to invest in programming without worrying about losing it all to the big providers, but the only ones who hide programming behind it are big companies (such as Comcast)”.
