CES 2010: Show Registration Tops 120,000

Preliminary Tally Shows Attendance Up 6% Over 2009 Event

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 1/11/2010 8:36:57 AM

The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show appears to have bounced back some from a lackluster 2009 turnout, with a preliminary tally of more than 120,000 attendees in Las Vegas last week -- up at least 6% from 113,085 a year earlier.

The Consumer Electronics Association, which produces CES, had previously forecast 110,000 people at the 2010 show, flat compared with its lowered expectations for 2009.

"This show exceeded expectations with its innovation, optimism and excitement," CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro said in a statement. "What a great way to start off the decade."
Still, this year's turnout looks to be under the high-water mark of 143,695 set in 2007, followed by 141,150 in 2008. CEA conducts an independent audit of show attendance and expects to release the final verified figures in the spring.

At the 2010 CES, which ran from Jan. 7-10, 3DTV captured the lion's share of buzz, with a slew of new 3D-capable TVs and Blu-ray player announced by Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Vizio and others, along with 3DTV announcements from DirecTV, ESPN and Discovery Communications.

Other categories featured at the show included mobile TV devices and services, e-book readers, netbooks and tablets.
Exhibitors at the 2010 CES declined to 2,500, from 2,700 the year earlier. Those companies introduced more than 20,000 new products at the show over the last week. More than 250 conference sessions also took place over the four days of the 2010 CES, including a Q&A between Shapiro and Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski.
