Newsday.com's Pay Wall Lets In Ex-Cablevision Subs

MSO-Owned Long Island Newspaper Expects to Resolve Issue Within 24 Hours

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 1/13/2010 4:55:00 PM

There's a bit of a hole in the pay wall set up by Newsday, the Long Island newspaper owned by Cablevision Systems: users with defunct Optimum Online broadband accounts have been able to log in to read the news, too.

In October 2009, Newsday announced that most of the content on its Web site would be available only to customers who receive newspaper home delivery; to Optimum Online subscribers; or via a $5-per-week subscription.

But according to two former Cablevision customers, even Optimum Online user names and passwords from inactive accounts can be used to log into Newsday.com.

One source -- who was able to log in using a Cablevision account that expired in 2003 -- said, "I can't imagine that they'd be thrilled about this working, and am really surprised that it's doable."

In statement Wednesday afternoon, Newsday director of community affairs and media relations Deidra Parrish Williams said: "We are aware of the matter and expect it to be resolved in the next 24 hours."

Cablevision has previously said about 75% of Long Island households already subscribe to Newsday home delivery, Optimum Online service or both. The cable company has about 2.5 million broadband subscribers and Newsday's weekday circulation was 357,124 as of Sept. 30, 2009, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
