BigBand Ships 700,000 Edge QAMs

Vendor Also Ships BEQ6200 High-Density Platform

BigBand Networks announced it has shipped more than 700,000 QAMs to more than 60 service providers worldwide, with customers that include Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable.

Additionally, the company announced commercial availability of its BEQ6200 8:1 QAM, which is designed to double density over previous generations by providing 96 QAMs in a 1.5-rack-unit form factor.

Operators using BigBand's edge QAMs include Cox and Time Warner Cable, both of which have also deployed the vendor's switched digital video platform. A QAM device transmits digital video, voice and data over RF spectrum.

BigBand purchased a QAM edge resource management technology license for $2.5 million on June 30, 2009, net of accumulated amortization, according to its most recent quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company did not identify the party it licensed the technology from. BigBand said it is amortizing the amounts paid for the license fee over the estimated useful life of three years.

"We believe our market leading BEQ platform gives customers the operational flexibility to implement and manage larger number of new and legacy QAMs with the best mix of reliability and density and path to next-generation platforms," BigBand chief operating officer David Heard said in a statement.

BigBand claims to be the leading provider of edge QAMs worldwide. Its BEQ systems support broadcast, switched digital video, video on demand, IP video, Modular CMTS, and DOCSIS applications, including 3.0-compatible video delivery.
