Cutting Out Cord-Cutters

(RE: “Less Than 8% Of Consumers Would Cancel Pay TV,” Feb. 4): “It’s not surprising that the number of people considering 'cord-cutting’ has gone down, given that networks have been cutting back on free, streaming programming and putting their resources into TV Everywhere initiatives. Authentication services are a move to make content available online only to those who already have a pay TV subscription. While this strategy may prevent cord-cutting in the short-term, it’s not a sustainable model for long-term growth. Networks should be trying to leverage the affordances of online distribution rather than making the Web look like linear TV.”

Almost Getting It

(“ACA: New Stimulus Rules Are Not Fair, Balanced,” Feb. 2): “The ACA members are sort of right; if they can get enough money to build to cheap bandwidth, and then get some more funds to add a few dozen Megahertz of capacity to their plant, small operators could launch DOCSIS 3.0, which is much cheaper and faster than satellite broadband, much cheaper than a fiber buildout and a good bit faster than even bonded DSL.”
