Synacor Links 14 MSOs Into NBC's Olympics Online Connect

Web Portal Provider Enables Operators' Subs To Log Onto Largest 'TV Everywhere' Service Yet

Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 2/11/2010 5:02:34 PM

Web-portal provider Synacor worked with 14 cable operators, including Charter Communications, to allow their subscribers to log into NBC Universal's Olympics Online Connect video site, which represents the largest programmer-hosted "TV Everywhere" service to date.

Through NBCOlympics.com, NBC is making more than 1,000 hours of video content -- including live feeds of every hockey and curling event -- available to subscribers of participating pay-TV affiliates. The Olympics Online Connect program is part of a larger package of programming made available by NBCU for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, which run Feb. 12-28.

NBC OlympicsNBCOlympics.comWhile as many 85 providers previously had been listed on NBC's Olympics Online Connect site, NBCU expected some of them to not make the cut because of technical issues or other reasons, with ultimately between 55 to 65 in the mix.  As of Thursday (Feb. 11) afternoon, the NBCOlympics.com site listed 77 partner providers.

Synacor worked with 14 cable system operators, which represent more than 9 million subscribers: Charter, WOW!, Armstrong, Blue Ridge Communications, HickoryTech Corporation, Bend Broadband, Midcontinent Communications, Suddenlink Communications, Atlantic Broadband, Mediacom Communications, GVTC Communications, Knology, Grande Communications and NewWave Communications.

"NBC's ‘Olympics Online Connect' is a great example of the media industry coming together to distribute high quality content online," Synacor Ron Frankel, president and CEO of Synacor. "We're pleased to be working with NBC Universal and its distribution partners as they explore new ways to bring value to their subscribers."

Synacor is serving as a single point of integration that links NBCOlympics.com with the back-end systems of cable operator affiliates.

For operators using the Synacor solution, authorized video subscribers will be able to access exclusive live and long-form online video on NBCOlympics.com. After identifying their cable television provider, subscribers are directed to enter their provider login credentials, which will be confirmed via Synacor authentication systems. Authorized subscribers will receive immediate access to the requested content, while subscribers who don't currently have log-in information will be directed to a signup process.
