ESPN Will Launch Two-Hour Saturday Afternoon Block On ABC In April

Weekly Highlight Show 'Winners Bracket' To Combine With Other Fare On 'ESPN Sports Saturday'

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 3/13/2010 5:42:44 PM

It's not exactly a reprise of Wide World of Sports, but ESPN will launch a two-hour block on broadcast brethren ABC, beginning next month.
The two-hour window will comprise a new 60-minute, highlight-driven series titled Winners Bracket and a mix of ESPN offerings, including films from the acclaimed 30 for 30 documentary series, installments of the award-winning newsmagazine E:60 and episodes of the interview-focused Homecoming with Rick Reilly.
ESPN Sports Saturday is scheduled to begin on April 3 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is slated to run through mid-August. Following college football season, it will return for another round of shows from December through August 2011. The block may be modified for time purposes.
"ESPN Sports Saturday is a creative way to mix more high quality sports product with ABC's strong live event lineup," said ESPN executive vice president of content John Skipper in announcing the program. "Winners Bracket will review the sports week using a fresh and fun approach, while some of the very best ESPN series will provide an extremely compelling companion."

Noted Bill Hoffman, vice president, general manager, WSB-TV in Atlanta and the chair of the sports committee for the ABC affiliate board of governors: "We are excited about this brand new sports offering from such a trusted brand. This program comes as a result of great creative thinking and collaboration between the ABC board and ESPN."
