Time Warner Cable Fires Up Wideband In Dallas, Buffalo and Syracuse

MSO Launches 50-Mbps Internet Service in North Texas and Upstate N.Y. Markets

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 3/16/2010 1:24:57 PM

On the same day the FCC released its National Broadband Plan, Time Warner Cable officially launched DOCSIS 3.0 service in parts of its North Texas and Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y., service areas offering subscribers up to 50 Mbps downloads.

Previously, TWC offered the next-generation cable modem technology only in its New York City division, where it became available in the fourth quarter of 2009.

As in the Big Apple, Time Warner Cable Wideband Internet with up to 50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up is available to residential customers for $99.95 per month in North Texas, Buffalo and Syracuse. The Road Runner Extreme tier with 30 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up is $69.95 per month; that tier is not available in New York City.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the MSO will initially offer the Time Warner Cable Wideband Internet service to customers in Carrolton, Flower Mound, Plano, Grapevine, Bedford and Lewisville. TWC said it will deploy DOCSIS 3.0 services to all customers in North Texas "in the coming months."

In Buffalo, initially the wideband service will be available to two-thirds of TWC's service area, according to spokesman Justin Venech.

Time Warner Cable is positioning the Wideband Internet service as ideal for subscribers with multiple users in the same household and multiple devices. Customers can connect up to five devices simultaneously to the DOCSIS 3.0-based services.

"With substantially increased Internet speeds, Time Warner Cable is taking our popular Internet service to the next level to meet the needs of customers here in North Texas. Time Warner Cable Wideband Internet gives all home network devices -- desktops, laptops, gaming consoles and mobile devices -- our fastest connection yet," Robert Moel, regional vice president of Time Warner Cable's North Texas service area, said in a statement.
