With a slew of thrilling games and upsets, NCAA March Madness on Demand got off to a record start with the first day of the Division 1 Men's Basketball Championship.
CBSSports.com said the online platform, which streams the tourney games for free, connected with 3 million unique visitors on March 18, 11% more than on the initial day of the 2009 version of March Madness.
All told, there were 3.4 million hours of live streaming video and audio consumed, over 20% growth versus 2009 figures,
Both figures represent the largest single day of traffic for a live sport event on the Internet, according to CBS and NCAA officials.
The most-watched game on March 18 was BYU's double-overtime triumph over Florida, which attracted 521,000 hours of streaming video and audio. That marked a 50% jump over the most-watched first-day game from the 2009 tourney, Washington-Mississippi State, which scored some 348,000 hours.
