Bell TV Drives 3D Masters Coverage

Will Offer Back-Nine Views Across Canada During Third, Fourth Rounds

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 4/9/2010 1:11:54 PM

Bell TV is in the club of distributors offering 3D coverage of The Masters.
The communications company, which serves some 2 million homes across Canada, said it will offer the third and fourth round of the Grand Slam event on April 10 and 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to all of its subscribers that have high-definition service at no extra charge. The commercial-free telecast, which is being produced by ESPN and Pace, using Sony cameras and being transmitted by Comcast Media Center, can be found on channel 1000. Bell TV HD set top boxes are already capable of receiving 3D HD, although customers also require a 3D television and compatible 3D glasses.

Bell joins Shaw Communications north of the border in presenting the 3D telecast of the most of the back nine from the prestigious golf tournament from Augusta National.

In the U.S., Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox and Cablevision are carrying The Masters in 3D; two cable operators in Europe are also on board with the enhanced telecast.

Bell also plans to leverage 3D broadcasts to showcase to prospective customers the superior quality of Bell TV at select locations of The Source and other national retail partners.
"Bell TV has become Canada's fastest-growing television service thanks to our ongoing innovation in digital TV, with the most high- definition channels available in Canada and now the country's first national 3D TV service," said Kevin Crull, president of Bell Residential Services, in a statement. "The 2010 Masters Tournament is an ideal opportunity to showcase 3D HD technology, which will make watching the event on a 3D television just like being on the green."
Noted Heather Tulk, senior vice president of products for Bell Residential Services: "3D TV is very new technology and few 3D sets are in Canadian homes now. But Bell is committed to being at the forefront of television innovation, and we'll continue to expand our 3D TV lineup as more quality content becomes available."
