Widevine Technologies, a provider of content-security solutions for Internet-delivered video, announced that Netflix and Best Buy are using its platform and that it has enhanced its software to support additional devices and delivery methods.

Version 4.4.4 of the Widevine video optimization and digital rights management (DRM) platform for over-the-top services delivered to consumer electronics include support for live HTTP streaming, file downloads, progressive downloads and P2P distribution, as well as HTTP adaptive streaming for smooth playback of content.

In addition, with the latest release, Widevine now supports more than 60 devices, including: Apple Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad; Haier Blu-ray players; LG Electronics TVs, Blu-ray players and Home Theater Systems; Nintendo Wii; Philips Blu-ray players; Samsung Blu-ray players and TVs; Toshiba Blu-ray players; Windows PCs; and more than 50 set-top box models.

"We are committed to giving our members a wide range of options by enabling them to instantly watch thousands of TV episodes and movies on many Netflix-ready devices," Bill Holmes, Netflix vice president of business development, said in a statement.

Other companies using Widevine's DRM include Blockbuster and Sonic's Roxio CinemaNow service.

Seattle-based Widevine's investors include Cisco Systems, Charter Ventures, Liberty Global and Samsung Ventures America.
