Dish 'TV Everywhere' Service To Use Widevine Technology

Satellite Operator Picks Vendor to Provide DRM, Other Capabilities

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 5/3/2010 6:00:00 AM

Dish Network, which plans to launch a "TV Everywhere" Web portal later this year, has selected Widevine Technologies to provide digital rights management and other video technologies for the forthcoming service.

Widevine will provide adaptive-rate streaming; virtual DVD-like "trick play" features; and digital DRM for the pay-TV provider's TV Everywhere service.

The companies said Widevine's video-optimization and DRM platform will ensure that Dish customers "viewing their live and recorded shows throughout the home with TV Everywhere receive the highest-quality entertainment, while at the same time ensuring that DISH Network programming is securely delivered wirelessly to any device anywhere in the home."

Dish has not disclosed which programming partners it is working with, or other specifics of its planned TV Everywhere service. The No. 2 direct-broadcast satellite company applied to trademark "TV Everywhere" last fall.

"We are excited to partner with Widevine to bring TV Everywhere to our customers," said Bruce Eisen, Dish's vice president of online content development and strategy, in a statement. "With Widevine's Hollywood studio-approved DRM and video optimization technologies, Dish Network customers will have the freedom to watch their favorite programming throughout their home and on the go via a multitude of devices."

Other Widevine customers include Netflix, Blockbuster and Sonic's Roxio CinemaNow. Investors in Seattle-based Widevine include Cisco Systems, Charter Ventures, Liberty Global and Samsung.
