Cable Show 2010: Motorola Touts 'Medios' Software, VOD Servers
Vendor to Showcase Media-Delivery Platform, On-Demand Servers

Motorola will show off Medios, a new multiscreen service management software suite, along with four new video-on-demand server platforms at next week's Cable Show in Los Angeles.
While the details about Medios (pronounced "me-dee-oss") remain sketchy, Motorola describes the product as a "secure media delivery platform that enables operators to manage and merchandize infinite content, rapidly evolve service offerings, and personalize consumer experiences across multiple screens and networks."
The goal is to prepare MSOs for the "Internet era of TV," according to John Burke, senior vice president of Motorola's Mobile Devices and Home unit.
One of the concepts with Medios is that it can provide a "cloud-based user interface," he said. "Our approach, and what our service provider customers are telling us, is to have the ability to deploy new UIs [user interfaces] and applications more rapidly," Burke said.
Motorola's demos at the Cable Show will be broken into five areas: multiscreen service management; multiscreen experiences, including a "social TV" application; media processing and distribution; 3DTV; and access networks.
Also at the show, the company will introduce a new family of VOD servers -- the M3 Media Servers -- designed to deliver multimedia content and services across TVs, PCs and mobile devices.
Motorola said the M3 line comprises four primary platforms and represents the integration of its acquisitions of Broadbus Technologies and BitBand Technologies.
The products are: the M3-S100, a solid-state edge server that supports 2,500 SD streams in a 1RU enclosure; the M3-S200, which can store up to 12 TB of media content per 2RU, while simultaneously enabling live ingest and streaming; and the M3-C600 and C1000 Media Centers, which each support up to 40,000 SD streams and up to 12 TB of flash storage in a 10RU chassis.
The M3 products are scheduled to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2010. The M3 Media Servers will be offered as part of the vendor's Media Delivery System, which also includes the Motorola CPS-1000 Content Propagation System for cable and the BitBand Maestro content delivery network management system for over-the-top Internet video and IPTV environments.
Motorola's newly created Mobile Devices and Home business is being separated from the wireless-infrastructure and enterprise pieces of the company in a split expected to be completed in early 2011.
