Charter Eyes More HD Via Motorola SDV Rollout

MSO Has Used BigBand's Switched Digital Video Solution

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/9/2010 8:22:14 PM

Charter Communications plans to expand its HD channel count using switched digital video gear from Motorola, targeting SDV deployments across 60% of its footprint by the end of 2010.

Charter has used BigBand Networks for some SDV deployments. The MSO did not indicate how much additional HD programming it intends to deliver as a result of the expansion of switched digital video.

"Our goal is to deliver value to our customers, offering the best choices in quality content, including high-definition programming and fast, reliable Internet speeds," said Marwan Fawaz, Charter's executive vice president of operations and chief technology officer, in a statement. "Motorola's proven switched digital video solution allows us to meet this growing demand for HD and speed."

Charter has already deployed Motorola's SDV services in North Carolina, Missouri and Nevada, with more launches planned for later this year.

According to Motorola, Charter's deployments bring total operator commitments for the Motorola SDV solution to more than 30 million homes passed. Switched digital video improves bandwidth utilization by transmitting only those channels that are being watched in a specific neighborhood at any given time.

Charter, the No. 4 cable operator in the U.S., had 5.0 million basic video subscribers (of which 3.16 million were digital) as of the end of March.
