PBS, Gravitas To Launch On Demand Package

Transactional Package To Offer 30 hours Of PBS-Based Docs Monthly

by R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 7/6/2010 8:13:05 AM

PBS will launch this fall a new monthly transactional On-Demand package featuring its award-winning documentaries as part of a partnership with on demand content distributor Gravitas Ventures.
The package, Documentaries On-Demand, will offer 30 hours of PBS-distributed documentaries and independent titles, including 10 new hours monthly, according to Gravitas officials.
Titles featured as part of the package include PBS shows American Experience and Independent Lens, as well as other documentaries like The Street Stops Here, a portrait of high school basketball coach Bob Hurley; My Lai, which focuses on the infamous Vietnam War massacre, its subsequent cover-up, and the heroic efforts of the soldiers who broke ranks to try to halt the atrocities; and Tiny Tears, which stars actor Danny Glover and focuses on children whose lives have been affected by AIDS.
Select titles will debut on VOD ahead of their PBS television broadcasts and before they are made available on DVD. Gravitas would not reveal pricing for the package, adding that operators will ultimately set the transactional fee for the content.
"The PBS brand is synonymous with high-caliber content and we are thrilled to work with them to launch and market the Documentaries On-Demand package." said Nolan Gallagher, founder and CEO of Gravitas Ventures said in a statement. "Through this collaboration, we are able to provide our operator partners a vast roster of over 100 films every year that are sure to enthrall documentary lovers, as well as those captivated by incredible storytelling."
