ActiveVideo Develops 'Cloud-Based' 3DTV Interface

Vendor to Show 3D Navigation and Menuing Environment at IBC Show

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/2/2010 6:16:55 PM

ActiveVideo Networks has developed a 3DTV user interface that the company claims can be delivered to any existing set-top box or Web-connected device.

The vendor plans to demonstrate the "cloud-based" delivery 3D navigational and menuing environments on set-tops and televisions compatible with the CI+ (Common Interface Plus) European copy protection specification at the IBC conference, Sept. 9-14 in Amsterdam. Currently, ActiveVideo's 3D implementation uses a side-by-side frame-compatible format.

"As 3D continues to gain mass appeal, the optimal environment will include not just content, but enhanced navigation as well," Ronald Brockmann, ActiveVideo's managing director for Europe, said in a statement. "Our IBC demonstration is designed to show how a 3D user interface that is rendered in the network ‘cloud' can be streamed to any connected device -- including CI+ TVs -- enabling subscribers to enjoy a seamless 3D experience."

ActiveVideo's CloudTV platform uses existing video-on-demand systems or broadband connections to deliver interactive video and other content.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company, whose biggest customer is Cablevision Systems, changed its name from ICTV in 2008.
