Cablevision Systems is promoting free apps for Apple's and Google's Android-based mobile devices, providing subscribers additional ways to search TV listings and manage their DVRs remotely.

The Cablevision app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices was released on the iTunes App Store on Aug. 25, and is also now available on the Android Market. The applications support multiple users and devices per home -- which Cablevision says is a unique capability among its peers and competitors.
Early last year, Cablevision launched a mobile-optimized Web site, and added a DVR-scheduling capability in November. Cablevision also provides remote DVR management feature for regular Web browsers.
For now, the mobile apps don't provide access to TV content, although Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge last month discussed plans to deliver TV programming to devices like iPads and smartphones in subscribers' homes via Wi-Fi.
"We are pleased to provide this new app for Apple and Android devices, which is a valuable extension of our existing browser-based remote DVR scheduling and management feature," John Trierweiler, Cablevision's senior vice president of product management, said in a statement.
Key features of the apps include the ability to: search upcoming TV shows by cast, title, genre, description or keyword; browse TV listings by time, channel, or category; set single episodes or an entire series to record on any DVR in the home; and delete recorded shows or cancel upcoming DVR recordings.
