'True Blood's Final Bite: 6.5 Million On Sunday Night

Third-Season Finale Grew 5% From Sophomore-Concluder, Despite NFL, VMAs

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 9/14/2010 5:57:44 PM

True Blood finished its third-season run with strong Nielsens on Sunday night.
The vampire series drew 5.38 million watchers on Sept. 12 in its 9 p.m. premiere for the installment entitled "Evil Is Going On.", according to Nielsen data, and another 1.1 million to its encore airing at 11:30 p.m.

That was down 60,000 viewers from its series' high 5.44 million viewers that were attracted to this season's penultimate episode on Aug. 29, but up 5% from the second-season finale.

The series' delivery on Sept. 12 came despite its Labor Day weekend hiatus the prior week and robust competition from MTV's VMAs (11 million viewers) and NBC's Sunday Night Football (25.3 million for Washington's 13-10 victory over Dallas), the most-watched NFL primetime opener since 1996 and the Peacock's best ever NFL performance on a Sunday night.

For the season, True Blood averaged a series high gross audience -- linear plays, DVR and HBO On Demand -- of 12.7 million viewers, sans the contribution from the finale.

The season finales for Hung and Entourage averaged 2.3 and 2.7 million viewers, respectively, for their premieres on Sept. 12. For the season, the gigolo show and Hollywood buddy series amassed average gross audiences of 6.6 and 7.7 million viewers, respectively.
