SCTE's 2011 Cable-Tec Expo Set For Atlanta In November
Scheduling Separates Show From Next Year's Fall ‘Cable Connection' Week

The Society of Cable & Telecommunications Engineers' flagship Cable-Tec Expo next year is scheduled for Nov. 16-18, 2011, in Atlanta, as the event takes a hiatus from the cable industry's weeklong cluster of events.
Traditionally, Cable-Tec Expo had been held in May or June. SCTE agreed to move the conference to the fall starting in 2009, as part of the industry's twice-yearly Cable Connection cluster of events. That effort was led by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association at the direction of the NCTA's board of directors.
This year's Cable Connection Fall 2010 week in New Orleans encompasses the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing's CTAM Summit Oct. 18-20, followed by SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, Oct. 20-22.
Next year, however, the CTAM Summit currently is scheduled for Oct. 5-7, 2011, at New York City's Marriott Marquis as part of cable's Diversity Week with the NAMIC and WICT conferences. In 2012, CTAM Summit and the events will again be scheduled for the same week in mid-October, currently Oct. 14-19, 2012, in Orlando, according to the NCTA.
"We're partnering and working the best we can in migrating with the rest of the industry," SCTE president and CEO Mark Dzuban said.
He added, "I have to be practical about the environment for the constituent MSOs... I understand there's a lot of cost they need to manage, and people are looking for workforce efficiency from their senior leadership."
Attendance for this fall's Cable-Tec Expo is "tracking pretty close to where we were last year," according to Dzuban. In 2009, amid a snowstorm in Denver that temporarily shut down the airport, SCTE saw attendance fall to about 9,000, down 18% from a record turnout the year prior.
One of the issues affecting registration levels for 2010's Cable-Tec Expo was that -- because of the Cable Connection event realignment -- SCTE was unable to secure convention floor space in New Orleans until April 2010, according to Dzuban. That prevented SCTE from offering advanced registration for this year's Expo at the Denver event.
Still, Dzuban said interest in Cable-Tec Expo 2010 is high. For example, the association received the greatest number of technical paper abstracts ever, with 230 submissions. He also said the group plans to debut the SCTE Engineering and Operations Leadership Program, a new educational track aimed at senior technology managers, at the show next month.
