HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' Draws 3.4 Million To Second Installment's Premiere

'Eastbound & Down' Nets 150% Audience Jump For Sophomore-Season Debut

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 9/28/2010 3:30:00 PM

Not nearly as many viewers strolled the boardwalk with HBO's newest series on Sunday night.
The second installment of Boardwalk Empire garnered 3.3 million for its premiere on Sept. 26 at 9 p.m., down from 4.8 million in its premiere window the prior week, according to Nielsen data.
Boardwalk's bow was HBO's best for an original series since Deadwood debuted before 5.8 million on March 21, 2004, coming out of a lead-in by The Sopranos.
The first episode of Boardwalk Empire has already surpassed a gross audience of 11 million viewers with DVR and HBO On Demand data still coming in.

On Sunday, Boardwalk, which HBO already has renewed for a second season, attracted another 1.1 million watchers to its 11 p.m. encore, boosting its total to 4.4 million.
Elsewhere on Sept. 26, the second-season premiere of comedy Eastbound & Down averaged 1.7 million at 10:30 p.m., outperforming its premiere by 150%. The sports comedy added another 300,000 watchers at 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 27, pushing its audience to the 2 million.
Bored to Death didn't fare as well. Despite its Boardwalk lead-in, the show's sophomore season starter averaged 1.1 million watchers, up 2%, from its premiere. Including its second play at midnight, Bored to Death was watched by a combined 1.5 million viewers.
