Cable-Tec Expo Draws 8,200 To New Orleans

Attendance at SCTE's Flagship Event Down 8.9%

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 10/25/2010 9:31:18 AM

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers' flagship Cable-Tec Expo 2010 last week in New Orleans drew about 8,200 attendees -- down about 8.9% from 9,000 at last year's event.

SCTE cited "continued attention to travel resources and other industry and economic factors" for the lower attendance levels.

And while the raw numbers have declined from a peak of 11,000 show-goers in 2008, SCTE has emphasized that it is trying to attract higher-level, strategic technology executives.

Last week, for example, the association announced an agreement with Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business to create a program designed to maximize the leadership effectiveness of cable technology executives, with a weeklong course scheduled to debut in the spring of 2011.

"Even in an extremely difficult business environment, Cable-Tec Expo 2010 showed the industry's collective commitment to bringing problem solvers together to solve problems and meet consumers' needs," SCTE president and CEO Mark Dzuban said in a statement. "We believe that the forward thinking that was evident in our panels, in our workshops and on the show floor in New Orleans provided significant value by accelerating the industry's ability to deliver new services."

Previously Dzuban had also said SCTE's inability to pre-register attendees at the 2009 Denver show for New Orleans, because of rescheduling necessary to accommodate the industry's Cable Connection week, inhibited the draw for this year's event.

SCTE said there were nearly 400 exhibitors at the event, held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, with more than 60 new technology vendors. The association also touted growth in international attendance and the addition of more than 100 new SCTE members.

The 2011 Cable-Tec Expo is scheduled for Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center from Nov. 15-17.
