Nat Geo Scores Great Reach With 'Migrations' Debut

Special's Premiere Captures 8.2 Million On Nov. 7

National Geographic Channel moved plenty of viewers with the world premiere night of its Great Migrations programming event.
The first installment of the seven-hour special, Great Migrations: Born to Move, captured a 1.4 household rating, Nat Geo's highest-rated household premiere in 2010, averaging 1.38 million viewers in the 8 p.m. hour on Nov. 7, according to Nielsen data. The debut episode reached 3.5 million watchers (viewing for one minute) and 1.4 million adults 25 to 54.
The second hour, Great Migrations: Need to Breed, scored a 1.3 household rating and 1.19 million viewers on average, with reach totalling 3.1 million viewers and 1.3 million of the aforementioned demo group.
Between the hours of 8 p.m and 10 p.m. (ET), NGC was the 10th highest-rated cable network on Nov. 7, according to network officials.
Over three airings during its debut night (Born to Move encored at 10 p.m.), Great Migrations' reach totalled 8.2 million viewers, 5.8 million households and 3.4 million persons 25 to 54.
With Honda as a presenting sponsor, the Great Migrations event, chronicling epic animal migrations and narrated by Alec Baldwin, continues Nov. 14, with two more core hours. Great Migrations: Feast or Famine and Great Migrations: Race to Survive are scheduled at 8 p.m and 9 p.m., respectively, while a behind-the-scenes special follows 10 p.m.
Additional hours include a scientific investigation of animal migrations and an hour-long visual concert.
