Motorola Mobility Acquires Media-Streaming Startup Zecter

Technology Lets Users Access Video, Music, Photos from Multiple Devices

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 12/22/2010 11:39:59 AM

Motorola Mobility announced it has acquired Zecter, a startup that has developed synchronization and streaming technologies to lets users access their video, music, photos and documents from smartphones, tablets and PCs.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Burlingame, Calif.-based Zecter, founded in 2007, has received funding from Y Combinator, Tandem Entrepreneurs and Sherpalo Ventures.

Motorola Mobility said it will integrate Zecter's wireless syncing, desktop integration, video transcoding and "thin-file" retrieval technologies across its device and Motoblur offerings to provide consumers with real-time access to their content.

Zecter currently offers two products commercially: ZumoDrive, for network-based content synchronization, access and sharing; and ZumoCast, for personal media streaming to any device.

"Consumers want seamless access to their content and media from wherever they are, while content providers want to ensure that content remains protected and secure," Motorola Mobility corporate vice president of software and services Christy Wyatt said in a statement. "We believe that Zecter enables that seamless experience with the necessary security measures, and we are delighted to be able to work with this team."

With the Motorola Mobility deal, Zecter will suspend distribution of its ZumoCast software temporarily while enhancements are made. Existing ZumoCast users will not be affected and the ZumoDrive solution will be unaffected, according to the companies. Zecter claims to have about 1 million users of its software.

Motorola Mobility, the wireless handset and cable equipment business entity, is scheduled to spin off from Motorola Inc., which will change its name to Motorola Solutions, on Jan. 4, 2011. Motorola Solutions Inc. will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MSI, and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. will begin trading on the NYSE under the ticker symbol MMI.
