Discovery Expands Use Of RSG Rights-Management System

Will Use RightsLogic Application for TheHub, OWN and 3net

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 4/7/2011 2:23:24 PM

Discovery Communications expanded its deal with RSG Media Systems to use the vendor's RightsLogic to manage intellectual property for three additional networks: The Hub, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, and 3net, the joint venture 3D network joint venture of Discovery, Sony and IMAX.

Under the agreement, The Hub, OWN and 3net will use RSG's Asset Maintenance software to help store data for media assets and properties, including programs, episodes, films, music, and elemental assets such as digital clips and other derivative works. In addition, the networks will use RightsLogic Rights-In and Rights-Out software, which helps synthesize deal information for acquired and original content; that application is designed to track critical events such as option renewal windows and payments due in or out.

Discovery uses RSG's RightsLogic for a majority of its networks, including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC and Military Channel.

"RSG Media's RightsLogic apps will provide transparency into media asset availability so Discovery and their JV partners know what content they have to use or sell across myriad platforms, including digital. It eliminates the need for time consuming manual updates and tracking licensing deals and content," RSG CEO Mukesh Sehgal said in a statement.

Discovery has a perpetual license agreement with RSG for the system. Other customers of New York-based RSG include Rainbow Media and Viacom's MTV Networks.
