SCTE Creates IPv6 Working Group

Initial Members Include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, BHN, Arris, D-Link and Rogers

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 10/6/2011 2:02:50 PM

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers has formed a working group aimed at accelerating the planning for and deployment of IPv6 -- the next-generation Internet protocol -- across cable networks.

Initial members of the IPv6 Deployment Working Group include: Arris; Bright House Networks; Comcast; D-Link; Rogers Communications; and Time Warner Cable. The forum is open to all SCTE members.

Internet providers, content producers and equipment providers are being forced to adopt IPv6 because ISPs will run out of their IPv4 addresses as early as late this year or the beginning of 2012. IPv6 provides a cosmically large number of unique address, roughly 2 to the 128th power, compared with about 4.2 billion with IPv4.

The SCTE's IPv6 Deployment Working Group will bring together cable engineers, engineering managers and others from the MSO and vendor communities to share information and best practices on device management and service enablement in an IPv6 environment.

"The challenges of implementing IPv6 are far outweighed by the feature benefits that the new protocol will bring to our industry," John Brzozowski, chief architect for IPv6 and distinguished engineer for Comcast. "We anticipate that the collaborative exchanges among members of the IPv6 Deployment Working Group will significantly streamline the transition to IPv6 for cable operators, vendors and -- most importantly -- our customers."

More information on the SCTE's IPv6 Deployment Working Group is available at http://www.scte.org/areas_of_interest/ipv6.aspx.
