Cable-Tec Expo: Casa Cooks Up CMTS For Apartments, Hotels

DOCSIS 3.0 System Designed for Multidwelling Units and Hospitality Market

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 11/14/2011 9:00:00 AM

Casa Systems is going beyond residential households with a slimmed-down cable modem termination system (CMTS) designed for multidwelling units and hotels.

The vendor's C1G, in a 1-rack-unit-high form factor, supports one downstream QAM port, two DOCSIS upstream ports, and two Gigabit Ethernet SFP network ports. The CMTS supports configurations ranging from two downstream / two upstream channels (2x2) up to eight downstream / eight upstream (8x8).

To comply with the DOCSIS 3.0 spec, the C1G supports upstream and downstream channel bonding; AES encryption/decryption; quality of service features; and support for IPv6. Casa will show the CMTS at the SCTE Cable-¬Tec Expo this week in Atlanta.

"The extremely compact form factor allows our customers to cost effectively pursue new business opportunities by focusing on the large MDU and hospitality markets," Casa founder and CEO Jerry Guo said in a statement.

Casa expects the C1G to be available by the middle of the first quarter of 2012. The system is not in field or lab trails yet "but we have had significant interest in the product," according to Casa spokesman Jim Gayton.

Andover, Mass.-based Casa boasts the only DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS with PacketCable 1.5 qualification. The company also sells universal edge QAM and video-processing solutions for broadcast and unicast services.
