Motorola Mobility Licenses FourthWall's EBIF, Mobile Device Software

Motorola Package Interactive TV Technology With Medios Service Management Suite

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 12/13/2011 8:47:10 AM

Motorola Mobility struck a deal with FourthWall Media to use FourthWall's Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format-based interactive TV platform for its set-tops as well as FourthWall's AirCommand solution for connecting mobile devices to EBIF set-tops.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Motorola will package the FourthWall software into the Motorola Medios multiscreen service management software for MSOs.

FourthWall's AirCommand is a set of cloud-based services connecting mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to EBIF-enabled set-tops. Potential applications include remote DVR programming; the ability to view video-on-demand titles on a device and play them on TV; and social media applications between mobile devices and set-tops.

FourthWall touted the deal as giving it EBIF coverage on both major cable set-top platforms deployed in the U.S., by adding Motorola to its EBIF software solutions for Cisco Systems. CableLabs' EBIF specification is designed to provide interactive features to even the lowest-powered set-tops currently in use.

"Working with Motorola, we are connecting this broad EBIF-enabled footprint to their Android-powered devices through AirCommand," FourthWall CEO Tim Peters said in a statement. "We look forward to a productive relationship with Motorola and collaborating on our cross-platform products that expand the Motorola Medios service."

Plano, Texas-based FourthWall's products and technology are distributed through partnerships with Comcast Media Center, Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Bright House Networks, Rovi, Dish Network and others.
