Co-Marketing Deal Part of MSO Proposed Sale of AWS Spectrum to Wireless Carrier

Verizon Wireless and Comcast have kicked off their joint marketing arrangement in the San Francisco Bay Area -- under which each party will push the other's products and services -- after the duo got the ball rolling two weeks ago in the Pacific Northwest.
The co-marketing deal is part of Comcast's proposed sale of Advanced Wireless Services spectrum to Verizon Wireless, which has yet to clear regulatory approvals. Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Cox Communications also entered into agreements to sell AWS holdings, as well as jointly market services and develop new technologies that span wireline and wireless networks.
As with the Comcast-Verizon Wireless joint offers in Seattle and Portland, Ore., new customers in San Francisco who lock into a two-year contract for an Xfinity double- or triple-play and a Verizon Wireless smartphone or tablet plan will be eligible to receive a Visa prepaid card valued up to $300.
"Through our agreement with Verizon Wireless, we're delivering even more value for consumers by providing an entertainment and communications solution that fits their lifestyle both in and outside the home," Steve White, president of Comcast's West Division, said in a statement.
More details on the offer are available at www.comcast.com/wireless. Verizon Wireless and Comcast said they expect to "further enhance and evolve" the co-marketing program based on customer feedback in the initial markets.
Separately Wednesday, Senate Antitrust Subcommittee chair Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) said that plans are "well under way" on a hearing about the Verizon Wireless deal to buy the AWS spectrum from MSOs. "The subcommittee carefully examines questions about competition in the wireless and video markets, with the ultimate goal of protecting consumers and reducing their cable and cell phone bills, and these deals are no exception," he said in a statement.
