Pace Tilts Toward TiVo

U.K.-Based Vendor to Port TiVo User Interface to Set-Tops, Gateways

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 2/22/2012 10:46:05 AM

TiVo struck a deal with U.K.-based manufacturer Pace, which plans to port TiVo's software and user interface to its set-top boxes and gateways.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Pace has licensed TiVo's Hardware Porting Kit and will work with TiVo to build a "TiVo-verified" platform, which will provide pay TV operators that have a licensing deal with TiVo the option of using Pace hardware.

The combined solution will use Pace's provisioning and device management capabilities and provide integrated broadband connectivity for communications and content delivery. In addition, the duo's solution will use TiVo's multiroom DVR features and support both traditional set-top and IP clients, including TiVo's mobile and tablet applications.

Pace intends to offer TiVo-based implementations for both DVR and advanced gateway set-top boxes globally, with an initial product to be made available to cable operators in the Americas.

"We are thrilled to be working with TiVo as they have a great solution for operators looking to answer their customers' increased demand for advanced and hybrid TV capabilities," Pace CEO Mike Pulli said in a statement. "We've seen increased interest from all segments of our service provider business to integrate the TiVo solution. In working together, we will provide an offering which seamlessly marries the operator's television and Internet services in an elegant and easy to use product for their end users."

U.S. operators currently deploying TiVo offerings to their customers include Charter Communications, DirecTV, RCN, Suddenlink Communications and Grande Communications. TiVo's European operators include Virgin Media, the largest cable operator in the UK, and ONO, the largest cable operator in Spain.

TiVo president and CEO Tom Rogers said the Pace deal "is another step in achieving our constant goal of providing the TiVo service to an ever-expanding audience."

"The integration of TiVo's advanced television software with Pace's service provider optimized platforms will allow our mutual partners to offer TiVo's best-in-class linear and broadband TV experience with their choice of hardware," Rogers said.

TiVo is scheduled to report earnings for its quarter ended Jan. 31, 2012, on Thursday.
