Comcast Rate Hike Wasn’t That Wide
By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 9/3/2003 5:00:00 PM
Comcast Corp. Wednesday rushed to correct a wire-service story that some news organizations interpreted to mean that a 6% rate increase was planned for the Philadelphia region.
The Associated Press story detailed a $2.50 rate hike planned for systems on Maryland's Eastern Shore serving 10,000 customers. The rates are rising to cover increases in programming in those systems' expanded service tiers.
But the news item was 'vaguely worded,' according to a Comcast spokesperson, and it was repeated by news organizations -- including at least one Philadelphia TV station -- as a broader rate increase.
AP ran a corrected release Wednesday afternoon specifying that the rate hikes only involved a limited area.
