Motorola's Breen Takes Tyco Top Job
Horsham, Pa.— In a surprise announcement last week, Motorola Inc. chief operating officer Ed Breen resigned to take over as CEO and chairman of scandal-plagued equipment maker Tyco International Inc., effective today (July 29).
Breen, the onetime General Instrument Corp. CEO, had served as president and COO for just seven months. He will be replaced by Mike Zafirovski, president of Motorola's Personal Communications Sector.
Time Warner Cable Plans Denver Pullout
Denver— Time Warner Cable is closing down its corporate-services division here and transferring those employees to the East Coast. The MSO is planning to move the Denver-based personnel to Charlotte, N.C., where it has a major cluster and operations. Some engineering positions will shift to Herndon, Va., where Time Warner's Road Runner data service is based.
Senate Breaks Nom Logjam, Aiding Adelstein
Washington— A Senate vote to confirm Jonathan Adelstein's nomination to the Federal Communications Commission could come this week,a spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) said.
Adelstein's nomination received a boost when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) cut a deal with the White House late last week, clearing the way for the Senate to swiftly confirm dozens of nominees. McCain had vowed to hold things up pending President Bush's nomination of a McCain ally to the Federal Election Commission.
Broadcom Hires Terayon Engineer
Fremont, Calif.— Rich Prodan, chief scientist at cable-equipment vendor Terayon Communication Systems Inc., has taken a position as vice president and chief scientist at rival Broadcom Corp.'s Broadband Communications division. Terayon had not named a successor at press time.
