Sonnenberg Joins Adelphia

Adelphia Communications Corp. said it hired Covad Communications Group Inc. senior vice president and general counsel Brad Sonnenberg as its new executive VP and general counsel.
Sonnenberg will join Adelphia at the end of July and report to chairman and CEO William Schleyer.
Sonnenberg was one of the last major executive appointments Adelphia had to make. Earlier this year, the Denver-based MSO hired several new executives to key posts: chief financial officer Vanessa Wittman, chief technology officer Marwan Fawaz, chief administrative officer Joe Bagan, senior VP of programming Judith Meyka and senior VP for customer care Ellen Filipiak.
Schleyer, former CEO of AT&T Broadband, was named to his posts in March, along with former AT&T Broadband colleague Ron Cooper, Adelphia's president and chief operating officer.
In his new position, Sonnenberg will oversee all legal, regulatory and government-affairs activities at Adelphia.
In making the announcement, Schleyer said, "Brad is a proven leader who brings a wealth of knowledge to Adelphia. His government experience, restructuring expertise and understanding of the broadband industry make him an ideal leader for Adelphia's legal team."
Sonnenberg has more than 20 years of experience in the legal field. While he was at Covad, he played a leading role in the successful emergence of the digital-subscriber-line carrier from bankruptcy in 2001, Adelphia said in a prepared statement.
Adelphia filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2002.
