S-A Signs Wegener Deal

Scientific-Atlanta Inc. plans to buy Wegener Corp. digital-headend gear and sell it under a private-label deal with other S-A products.
The deal covers Wegener's 8-VSB (vestigial sideband) over-the-air digital HD and standard-definition-TV products.
S-A plans to introduce a basic demodulator to handle 8-VSB broadcast services to an ASI (asynchronous serial interface) output.
An advanced version will include a built-in multiplex feature to allow the combining of two 8-VSB broadcast signals into a single 38-megabit-per-second ASI output for injection into 256-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) cable applications.
In other technology news, Advanced Digital Broadcast announced that Bill Luehrs, a former Zenith Electronics Corp. and S-A executive, is joining the company as corporate executive vice president and president of the Americas division.
Luehrs will run ADB's Chicago office and head up the company's multimedia-home-platform and OpenCable-applications initiatives.
ADB licenses software to set-top manufacturers and original-equipment manufacturers.
And the California Cable Television Association and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers announced a July 11 deadline for technical papers for the Western Show, scheduled Dec. 2-5 in Anaheim, Calif.
