Lifetime: Violence Against Women Act Is Working

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 3/11/2004 10:12:00 AM

The impact of the Violence Against Women Act has been considerable, according to a congressional report released Thursday by Reps. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va.) and Louise M. Slaughter (D-N.Y.) and Lifetime Television.

Reps. Capito and Slaughter are the co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues.

"The Violence Against Women Act has helped to transform the perception of domestic abuse as a situation that should be dealt with in the home to a serious crime that should be resolved in a courtroom," Capito said in a prepared statement.

"Empowering women with the protection of the law and enforcing the potential consequences batterers would face has deterred violence against women," she added. "This is good news."
